Work on questions that matter
Research with a short path to use
Our researchers publish in leading journals and sit in rooms where policy is decided. Both, usually in the same year.
Proximity to decisions
Our counterparts are ministries, regulators and financial institutions. Findings reach them directly.
Academic freedom
We publish what we find. Research agendas are set by researchers, not funders.
International collaboration
Joint work with universities and institutes across Asia, Europe and Australia.
Development support
Conference travel, methods training, and support for staff pursuing doctoral study.
How we work
We are a small centre, which means responsibility arrives early and titles matter less than contribution. Research assistants present at our weekly seminar alongside fellows, and co-authorship follows contribution rather than seniority. Fieldwork is part of the job across most workstreams. So is writing for people who are not academics — every project produces something a district official can read in ten minutes. We operate a hybrid arrangement, with core days on campus in Depok and flexibility around fieldwork and writing periods.
